Plane trees store particulate matter in their bark. That is why the University of Antwerp, UCLouvain and Scivil are launching the Plane Tree Check. Thanks to members of the public collecting bark from plane trees in their neighbourhoods, researchers can map the levels of particulate matter in Belgium.

Scivil is joining forces with the imec-UGent research group WAVES for CitizenELF. High-voltage power lines generate extremely low-frequency (ELF) magnetic radiation. The strength of this radiation depends on the amount of electricity being transmitted and the distance from the source. With high-voltage power lines, the radiation is therefore strongest directly beneath the line. And it is this radiation that we now want to measure.

Within the UNESCO IHP-IX programme and with support from the Flemish Government, Scivil developed Citizens4Water, a global inventory of citizen science initiatives for hydrology and water management. The inventory consolidates knowledge from existing projects, supports the development or enhancement of citizen science projects, and identifies gaps in hydrology and water management practices.
