Scivil at international events: from Brussels to Gran Canaria
This spring, Scivil took part in several international events to highlight citizen science in Flanders, exchange ideas and gain inspiration. From Gran Canaria to Louvain-la-Neuve, Aberdeen and Delft, our team was on the move!
Here's a summary:
1. EUSEA Conference - 14-15 May 2025 - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Spain)
Isaak attended the annual EUSEA Conference, themed 'Crossing Oceans, Raising Our Sails. Navigating Public Engagement in Turbulent Times'. He presented Scivils amai!-project and how it strengthens digitally vulnerable groups in using and understanding artificial intelligence.
2. PCST Conference - 17-29 May 2025 - Aberdeen (Scotland)
Isaak, Steve and Jef participated in this international science communication conference, focused on 'Using Science Communication to effect positive change: exploring transitions, traditions and tensions'. They demonstrated the amai! co-creation approach and shared insights from Flanders and how to meaningfully involve citizens in science.
3. Unesco Network Day - 22 May 2025 - Brussels (Belgium)
The annual Unesco Network Day, organised by the Flemish UNESCO Commission, focused on AI and peace this year. During the session 'Citizen Science, Biodiversity and AI', Karen presented an introduction to citizen science and showcased the projects amai! and Citizens4Water.
4. Citizen Science for Water Quality: Shaping Action - 2 June 2025 - Brussels (Belgium)
In this workshop, organised by VUB and held just before the CS4Water Conference, Karen presented the Citizens4Water project to an international delegation including participants from Kenya and Cuba.
5. CS4Water Conference – 3–5 June 2025 – Delft (The Netherlands)
At this conference, Karen gathered input for the new Citizens4Water platform, which will launch in a pre-release this summer. From September onwards, the platform will provide a global overview of citizen science projects focused on water. Karen presented the project via a poster and engaged in discussions with researchers from all over the world.
6. World Climate Day – 5 June 2025 – Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium)
Annelies took part in the World Climate Day events hosted by the Circle U. alliance of European universities, during the seminar “Citizen Science: Rethinking Research With and For Society” at UCLouvain. She shared inspiring Belgian examples of how citizens contribute meaningfully to climate and environmental research, adding valuable perspectives to science. Other speakers included Caroline Michellier (UCLouvain) and Muki Haklay (Learning Planet Institute).
7. 50 Years of UNESCO's IHP – 10–12 June 2025 – Paris (France)
UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. As part of this programme, the Citizens4Water project was prominently featured. Karen presented the project on two occasions at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris.
