Citizen Science Fair 2025: A Look Back

On 18 June, citizen scientists, researchers, families and curious passers-by gathered in the garden of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences for the very first edition of the Citizen Science Fair. It was a warm and inspiring day filled with engaging encounters, interactive demonstrations, and above all, a shared passion for citizen science.

The Citizen Science Fair 2025 once again showcased the power of public participation in science: 71 professionals from Belgium and abroad presented their work at 30 different stands. From air quality and biodiversity to heritage and technology, visitors could get hands-on with data collection, try out tools and techniques, and have meaningful conversations with the people behind the science.

The event was jointly organised by Scivil, ECS (European Citizen Science), the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences and the European Commission. It served as a public-friendly prelude to the international Cluster Event on ‘Public Engagement and Citizen Science’, held on 19 June.

Despite the temperature reaching a sunny 27°C, the enthusiasm of participants and visitors remained high throughout the day. Over 120 people made their way to the garden, including families, teachers, chance visitors and policy-makers. Among them were four representatives from the European Commission, who later spoke very positively about the Fair during the Cluster Event. Their kind words and recognition were a lovely compliment to what was already a successful day.

Have a look at some of the day’s highlights in the photos below.
